Before we get started

Early scientific evidence looks good for CBD products, with minimal chance of adverse side effects.

However

I’m not a doctor and do not give medical advice.

Always consult with a medical professional before using any CBD product.

SECTION 1

4 Key Things to Look for

  1. Organic, non GMO ingredients

  2. Percentage CBD per serving

  3. Where and how it’s sourced

  4. 3rd party, independent lab testing

#1 Organic, Non GMO Ingredients

If you’re trying to improve your health, going organic without any added nasties is the way to go. And CBD products are no different.

Start by checking the label of the product. Does it say it’s organic? If not, it won’t be.

Next, look at the other ingredients and see what’s in it. Some added vitamins could be beneficial, but fillers and preservatives are best avoided.

Unsure of an ingredient, Google it.

Having said that…

A lot of products I have researched are not certified as organic, but they are grown under organic conditions. So no pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals used.

Certification is expensive. If I trust the brand and they do everything else right, I usually accept what they say about the growing conditions.

The key point is this…

If your purpose is to improve the quality of your health, always go organic when you can. And with CBD products, you can always get very close to it.

The MEDTerra CBD oil I review below is about as high quality as you can get. Below is a MEDTerra discount code for 15% off.

#2 Percentage CBD

I’ll talk more about the dosage later in this post, but related to that is how much CBD you’ll get per serving.

It’s a similar concept to drinking alcohol…A strong beer could be too much. A lighter beer and you won’t feel anything.

The same is true for how much CBD you are taking per serving or per day.

Here’s the thing…

A lot of the cheap products around are cheap because they don’t have much CBD in them.

Takeaway tip…

Look for a product that has at least 15mg of CBD per serving.

If buying capsules it will say clearly, but for CBD oil which comes in tinctures with a pipette, you may have to work it out.

Check out this handy guide for the most common size bottle and CBD content

How many mg of CBD in a dropper

[CP_CALCULATED_FIELDS id=”6″]

Here’s how to calculate it manually:

  • Volume of bottle: 30ml
  • CBD per bottle: 1,000mg
  • Serving size: 1ml
  • 1,000 / 30 = 33.3mg per serving
  • This bottle will last 1 month if taken every day

#3 Where and How it’s Sourced

Quality beats quantity (almost) every time.

Put a low quality CBD oil into your body and you won’t get much out of it. You’re basically wasting your money.

Look for products that are transparent in where the hemp is sourced from, what extraction process is used and how it is processed.

The bottom line…

Any decent company want to tell you about how high quality their product is and show you proof.

The more details they share with you, the higher the chance it’s legitimately higher quality.

Takeaway Tip…

The US and Europe have the highest quality hemp, so check it’s from there.

High quality producers will use the line from “seed to sale” to indicate that they can track their produce from where it’s planted all the way to the end product. This is what you want.

CBD Journey from Seed to Sale

#4 Independent Lab Testing

Each CBD product you take should be independently lab tested.

You want to know it’s safe and includes the ingredients as advertised.

It’s also good to know that the company are prepared to show you the independent reports to prove the quality of their product. After all, why would they hide anything?

Some companies also add a heavy metals report to their testing. This is a big plus, as it shows a higher degree of confidence in their product.

What to look for…

The reports should be freely available on their site and be dated.

You should be able to look-up the company that did the report and confirm its legitimacy.

Then check the numbers on the report match what it says on the product. There will usually be a report for each product type.

Also look for the date it was done. It should be fairly recent, within 10 months. Often, the company will also do in-house testing on every new batch produced, too.

No lab report?

No purchase! In such a new and unregulated there are, unfortunately, too many low value products and companies using low quality products.

Always go with your gut instinct, too. If a product seems to cheap compared to most others, ask why.

SECTION 2

The Benefits of Taking CBD

  • Why should you take CBD oil?

  • What do the studies show?

Let’s take a closer look at those questions in this section

Why Take CBD Oil?

It’s a great starting point and one which a lot of people overlook.

We hear all the hype about CBD oil being amazing for our health and often don’t question why.

Bad back? Try CBD oil. Constant headaches? CBD will fix it. Money problems? Try CBD oil!

What we know…

So far, well-blinded Randomised Controlled Trials have not been done (as far as I can find) for any of the conditions in which CBD is reported to help alleviate.

But there have been fairly good tests done in real world settings (clinics, mainly) which have shown promising results from using CBD for a whole host of conditions, such as:

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy

Note: Most of the cases have been quite severe, which is why the patients are in clinics. Studies on the general population appear to be even more limited as of yet.

The good news…

Is that CBD looks to have good potential in terms of helping people with severe conditions, so it’s fair to think it might help you and me, too.

It’s also been reported as non-addictive by the World Health Organisation:

“In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”

Back to why take CBD?

Most people take CBD to help with pain, anxiety, sleep or depression issues. And so far, studies appear to back up that it could be beneficial for that.

The only way to know for sure is to try it for yourself. It looks very safe to take and without any addictive qualities, so all you’ll lose is a bit of cash from buying it if it doesn’t work for you.

When to Take CBD Oil

So, you have your CBD product and now you want to know when to take it.

It’s a good question.

The first thing to say is there is no specific time of day best suited to taking your CBD product. It really depends on why you are taking it.

For example, if you are taking it to help with sleep it would be a good idea to try taking it at night.

If you are taking it to help alleviate stress and anxiety which you feel most in the day, then taking it in the morning and/or throughout the day would be a good starting point.

The bottom line…

Try what you think would be best for you and your situation and then adjust as and when needed. Here’s a handy graphic to show when you might take your CBD based on why you’re taking it.

When to take CBD oil in the day or night

SECTION 3

How Much CBD to Take

  • Is CBD oil safe to take?

  • CBD dosage for anxiety and other conditions

  • How much CBD oil should I take (UK)

Let’s look at these and more in this section

Is CBD Oil Safe and Legal?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) say:

“CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile”

The only caveat is that you can have too much of a good thing…Meaning, it depends on how much you take.

It’s safe to say that for most people, taking a reasonable amount (more on that in a second) it should not cause any issues.

The key thing…

Is to start off with a small amount and build up gradually.

Many studies have shown no negative side effects from taking CBD oil and the WHO have said it’s fine so you can take it with confidence.

How Much CBD to Take Per Day

Is CBD Oil Legal in the UK?

Yes, CBD oil is legal. The illegal substance is THC, which can be found in some cannabis plants.

CBD oil should be made from strains of the cannabis plant which have been bred to have low levels of THC and the remainder removed as part of the production process.

What to look out for…

I’ll talk about this more later, but you can get some CBD products which contain a trace amount of THC. They’re called full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD oils.

The trace amount is usually 0.05% but is allowed to be up to 0.2% for it to be legal in the UK. 0.3% for the US, but this could differ between states.

If you’re looking for a full or broad spectrum CBD oil, check out my review of Hempura below. There is a nice 5% off Hempura discount code there, too.

CBD Dose for anxiety, pain relief and sleep

Note: I am not a doctor and I’m not prescribing how much to take. The below are my opinions based on research and articles.

A large number of people are looking at CBD oil as a way to help improve sleep, reduce pain and minimise anxiety.

It’s no surprise, as these conditions have all been looked at in trials by medical professionals and have shown promising results.

Here’s the thing…

The amount of CBD used in most studies is pretty high. We’re talking 300-600mg a day. Considering you only get 500mg in some CBD tinctures, that would be 1 bottle a day!

Some studies have even used doses up to 1,500mg a day…

From my research, the general advice seems to be as follows:

  • Find a high quality, high strength CBD oil (1,000mg or higher per bottle)
  • Start off with a dose of around 15mg a day and work your way up slowly
  • Take note of how you feel each day

Note: This is the approach to take regardless of your condition.

The reason to do it this way…

Everyone has a different tolerance to CBD. Some people can have a higher dose without feeling the effects.

Start off day 1 with 15mg per day. After 5 days, increase it to 20mg if you feel fine. Then every week add another 5mg and see how you feel.

As mentioned, CBD oil is deemed very safe so unless you go crazy with the dose you should tolerate levels even up to several hundred milligrams (mg) per day.

The takeaway tip…

Every person is unique so start off with a small dose of 15mg per day and work upwards until you get the desired effect to your sleep, anxiety or pain.

If you’re taking it for sleep, have it before bed. For anxiety, take it in the morning and for pain take it when your pain is usually at its worst.

SECTION 4

Types of CBD

  • Full spectrum & broad spectrum CBD

  • CO2 vs ethanol extraction

  • What is CBD isolate

Let’s look at these and more in this section

Full spectrum, broad spectrum & CBD isolate

It’s not all about CBD…

There are over 100 different compounds found in the cannabis plant. CBD is one of them. THC is another.

We know that THC gives users a “high” like feeling, whereas CBD does the opposite. This is why it has been shown to help with anxiety.

And there is where the 3 main types of products come in:

  • Full spectrum CBD – The purest form. Usually minimally processed and contains all the natural, original compounds in the plant. From CBD to THC, albeit with very limited levels of THC due to the strain of cannabis plant bred.
  • Broad Spectrum CBD – Very similar to full spectrum but with all of the THC removed. For those who want no amount of THC. Some broad spectrum products also remove other compounds for various reasons.
  • CBD Isolate – This is pure CBD. Just the one compound. Most of these are CBD oils and greater than 99% pure CBD content.

So which is best…?

It depends on your opinion and why you are taking it in the first place.

My personal opinion is that a full or broad spectrum would be best because it’s as close to the original plant as possible.

Just like taking a vitamin tablet. I would argue that eating an orange is better than taking vitamin C. Extracting one single vitamin in isolation may not have the same impact in the body when compared to taken multiple vitamins and nutrients at the same time.

For example, we know that calcium can only be absorbed well when there is enough vitamin D present in the body.

Takeaway Tip…

Try each of the different types out for yourself to see which you like the most and which helps best.

Try all three, looking closely at the cannabinoid content of each product to see if a difference in it has a different impact.

CO2 vs Ethanol CBD Extraction

To get the final product, some kind of extraction and filtration process is required.

The two main types are super-critical CO2 and ethanol.

The ins and outs of each process we will not go into here, but the same questions remains. “What’s the best extraction to use?”

It depends…

On what you want to get out of the end product. Because of the different ways the extraction processes work, they are better or worse at pulling specific cannabinoids from the plant.

For example, you may want pure CBD, THCA or some other compound.

One manufacturer will claim their extraction process is better but it will depend on each product and the consumer’s requirements.

My personal opinion…

Is that I’d rather go with the least amount of processing possible. That seems to be full spectrum first off, but if you want a pure CBD oil then choose CO2 extraction.

The reason for that is because when using ethanol, it has to be done 100% right. Also, any manufacturer who use CO2 has heavily invested in their equipment and should, in theory, have a more efficient, reliable and safe product.

SECTION 5

How to Take CBD

  • The best way to take CBD oil

  • Is it better to smoke or ingest CBD

All this and more is covered in this section

Ingest, Smoke and Apply CBD

As the CBD market explodes Worldwide, there are more and more ways to take it.

You can vape it, apply it to your skin and consume it in oils, capsules and gummies.

So, which is best?

Personally, I’d avoid the vape option or any other way which requires you to smoke anything. There is no way that is going to end well in my opinion, so I won’t even cover that here.

5 Ways to Take CBD Products

Applying CBD oil topically (to your skin)

Your skin is a protective layer so it’s not going to allow too many things in. That’s why applying CBD to your skin is tricky. The dose will have to be high and the amount applied liberal for any absorption to take place.

The benefit is that if it does penetrate through the skin, it can get straight to work in an area which is causing you pain.

For example, if you have Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), you might find applying a high strength lotion helps alleviate the pain.

Truth be told…

You’ll have to try it out for yourself to find out if it works well for you. If you taking CBD for general health and well-being I would recommend ingesting it using a sublingual approach – dropping some oil under your tongue and holding it there.

Ingesting CBD products

You can find gummies, capsules and oils to take. It’s hard to know which is best but here are my thoughts.

CBD Gummies

These are not even worth considering. I haven’t been able to find any that don’t contain a load of added ingredients, sugar and unhelpful chemicals.

Capsules & Tablets

They could be ok for those who don’t like the oils, but again you will find it hard to find ones without fillers and capsule shells which contain questionable ingredients.

Additionally, there are question marks over how much your body will absorb. This is because the ingredients will have to survive the harsh conditions in your stomach and then be absorbed into the bloodstream in your intestines.

Oils

This is what I would recommend for most people. You can put the oil under your tongue so it gets absorbed more easily into the bloodstream.

They are also the cleanest and purest because they just contain the ingredients you want and a carrier oil such as coconut oil or hemp seed oil.

The bottom line…

Always go with the cleanest, purest form of the product. That’s the CBD oils which come in tinctures which you drop under your tongue.

SECTION 6

The Best CBD Products

  • The best CBD products to buy in the UK

  • Isolates, broad and full spectrum products

Recommended, high quality CBD products to buy with confidence

The Best CBD Products to Buy Online

I’ve spent a lot of time researching products which meet the criteria set out in this post.

There are thousands to choose from, very few tick the boxes.

Below are the ones I recommend, which fall into the following categories:

  • CBD Oil (Isolate)
  • CBD Oil (Full & Broad Spectrum)
  • CBD Capsules

Note: I do NOT recommend gummies because they all contain added ingredients such as sugar.

Go pure when you can, which is why oils are best and what I recommend.

MEDTerra CBD Oil Tinctures Review

500MG to 3,000MG CBD Oil Tinctures

Read on for my review…

It’s grown in the US, organically, tested regularly, has thousands of user reviews and is fairly priced.

The lab tests are from a 3rd party, independent lab (Pro Verde) are always readily available on the website to see and include heavy metal testing.

My Experience

I don’t have any underlying health conditions or medical reasons to take CBD oil.

I wanted to see if it would help me get to sleep more easily because I’ve never been able to drift off very quickly.

I ordered the 1,000 MG CBD oil tincture product and it arrived very quickly and well packaged to avoid damage.

The initial dose I started with was 0.5ml per day, which is almost 17MG of CBD from this 30ml bottle.

The measuring lines in 0.25ml increments on the dropper are very helpful.

In the first week I took it just before bed and definitely noticed that I slept deeper. I’m not sure that I got to sleep any quicker though.

The 2nd week I decided to start taking it earlier, around 3 hours before bed. I also increased the dose to 0.75 ml so a serving of 25 mg of CBD.

This appeared to have the effect of me feeling more relaxed in the evening and therefore I found it easier to get to sleep.

Placebo effect? Who knows, but even if it is I’ll take it if it means getting to sleep more easily.

Summary

The way I see it is this. I’m happy to try something out to see if it works for me. If it’s safe, which it is.

It won’t work for everyone the same way, but there’s not much to lose by trying it out.

Worst case is you spend £30-50 and it doesn’t work. But what if it does work, would that be the best £50 you spent this year? Probably.

Hempura CBD Oil Review

The best full spectrum CBD oil you can purchase. Pure, unfiltered and organically grown.

Hempura Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Read on for my review…

Hempura is manufactured in the UK and tested by a lab called British Cannabis.

Every product you purchase has a batch number on the box, which you can use to lookup the testing results on their website.

My Experience

Having already tried out a CBD Isolate from Medterra, I wanted to experience a full spectrum CBD oil.

The difference between them is explained above.

First impressions…

The first thing that hit me was the taste. This full spectrum product, as expected, is quite potent. Very earthy and natural.

The thing is, that’s why I bought it. I personally believe that keeping CBD as close to natural as possible is a good thing. With a full and broad spectrum product, you get that.

You get all of the 100+ cannabinoids present in this oil just like in the natural plant itself.

I’d like to point out that the look and feel of this product is much more natural. Less processed and polished, so more in tune with nature, which I like because I think that’s how it should be.

What I used it for…

I again used this mainly for seeing if it would improve my sleep. I think it seems just as effective as the MEDTerra product, truth be told.

But I also used it in the day from time to time, to see if it would help with relaxation and stress relief.

I’m not sure if it was a placebo or not, but it did seem to calm me down a bit.

How I took it…

I’d place 5 drops (25 MG of CBD) underneath my tongue and hold it there for a few minutes. Then I’d swallow what was left.

Note: Make sure you have a drink ready as it doesn’t leave the nicest taste in the mouth. It kind of sticks to the throat a bit. Kind of like cough medicine.

They say that if it tastes bad it’s probably good for you though, right!

Summary

For those wanting a more natural hit of CBD with the full spectrum of cannabinoids, I would recommend this over the MEDTerra option.

Hempura have both a broad and full spectrum product, so I would recommend either of them if that’s what you are looking for.

Go for the 1,000mg bottle so that you can dose high enough without getting through the whole bottle very quickly.

Hempura CBD Capsules Review

A full spectrum CBD capsule, with the minimal of added ingredients required.

Hempura CBD Capsules

Read on for my review…

On the whole I’m not a big fan of the capsules for a few reasons:

  1. Dosing – It’s a lot harder to do in increments because you have to take a whole capsule at a time
  2. Ingredients – There are added ingredients such as for the capsule shell vs a raw CBD oil
  3. Absorption – I’m always sceptical about how much of the CBD will be absorbed after being digested

Having said all that…

If you don’t like the taste or the idea of using a CBD oil from a pipette, CBD capsules are one way to get your CBD hit.

My Experience

I have been using the Hempura full spectrum CBD oil, which I like. You can read the full review of that above.

So how does taking their full spectrum in capsule form compare?

Let’s take a closer look…

I have used these CBD capsules in addition to the Hempura full spectrum CBD oil. I take 25 MG of the CBD oil mid-morning and then the capsules 2 hours before bed.

Compared to the oil, these capsules are much easier to take. Mainly because there is no taste.

They are quite large in size, but I’m sure most people will be ok taking them.

How I used them…

I wanted to add these to my regime to help improve my sleep. I had been trying out the oil before bed, but the taste was a bit too much and left a funny flavour in my mouth and throat for too long.

Taking these instead was a much better choice. I felt as though I slept better, but it can go up and down in terms of my sleep patterns anyway, so it’s difficult to say with 100% certainty at the moment.

Are they right for you…?

If you want a full spectrum CBD capsule, I’d recommend these ones from Hempura. They are the ones with the least amount of added ingredients I could find and the capsule shells are suitable for vegetarians.

Whether they work unique to you. Every person is different and what works for one person might not work for another.

The bottom line…

Is that you’d want to take these capsules over an oil for convenience. You can take them with you easily, they’re not messy like an oil can be and they won’t break and spill.

It’s harder to adjust the dosage amounts, only in 10 mg increments and overall you are not getting as much value.

CBD Spray + Vit D

Truth Naturals Rise CBD Spray Review

A convenient, organic spray with added Vit D3 and a refreshing taste

Truth Naturals CBD + Vit D Spray

Read on for my review…

I wanted to try this CBD spray for a few reasons:

  1. Approx. 20% of the UK population are vitamin D deficient, this has your RDA
  2. The spray is easy to take and has a refreshing taste
  3. The CBD content is the same as in a 1,000 MG CBD oil tincture

My Experience

My usual routine was to have 4-5 drops of CBD oil mid-morning, followed by 2 capsules in the evening before bed.

I swapped out the oil for the spray for a week to see what it was like.

The first thing I noticed is that it’s so easy to take. A quick spray and you’re done. 7 sprays is 1ml, which is what I took each time. That’s 33 MG of CBD and 3,000 IU of Vit D3 (easily your RDA).

It tastes really good, too. The peppermint flavour really makes it refreshing and not a problem to have in your mouth, especially compared to the Hempura which is a very strong taste.

Is it effective…

Because of the way it’s taken, it doesn’t feel as medicinal. The spray doesn’t sit in the mouth like the oil. I still sprayed it under my tongue, for maximum absorption.

It felt good and I felt fine during the day. It’s hard to know exactly how much of an impact it’s having because I don’t have any specific conditions that I am using it for.

Overall, mood was good and stable.

Is it worth it for you…

If you are really put off by the taste of the full spectrum CBD oil (which is what I recommend), this could be a good second choice.

The downside of this one for me is the added ingredients. To be fair, they have done a really good job of making the ingredients real and high quality. It’s just the steviol sweetener which I would question.

Top Tip

What I ended up doing was having a mix of the Hempura CBD oil under the tongue, then spraying in this to mask the flavour. It really does help because I found the taste pretty hard to deal with day after day with the full spectrum Hempura product.

The bottom line…

This spray is great if you want to get a boost of Vit D with your CBD. It tastes really good, and has fewer added ingredients compared to a Vit D capsule.

For those who want that, or just hate the taste of the normal CBD oil, this is a great option. I would rate this over the CBD capsules.

It’s also the perfect kind of option to have during the day, as it’s refreshing and easy to carry.

Your CBD Questions Answered

What does 5% CBD oil mean?2020-04-28T09:20:40+01:00

A 5% CBD oil product in a 10ml bottle is 500 MG of CBD. In a 30ml bottle it is 1,500 MG. You can calculate it by multiplying the size of the bottle in ML by 1,000 and then take a percentage of that.

For example, 10 ml x 1,000 = 10,000 x 0.05 (5%) = 500 MG.

It’s so confusing when the amount of CBD is put in percentage terms but the dose in MG. For those just starting out taking it, a 5% CBD is ok but I would personally start off with a 10% one. Usually it’s the cheap ones from places like Holland and Barrett which only state the % and not the actual content.

Always check the label for added ingredients, too. All you want in a CBD oil is CBD and a carrier, such as MCT oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. No fillers or thickeners.

How much does CBD oil cost?2020-04-28T09:12:20+01:00

There is a large huge of prices when it comes to CBD oil for many reason. Firstly, the CBD content. A higher concentration will cost more. Second, the quality of the CBD. Is it organic? Where has it been grown? What are the other ingredients?

As with most other items you purchase, avoiding the cheapest and most expensive is probably the best idea. Something in the middle to upper middle price bracket would be best.

For CBD oil, that would be around £60 for a 1,000 MG of good quality, organic CBD.

Is hemp the same as hemp seed oil?2020-04-25T09:42:23+01:00

Short answer: No.

Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp (in terms of CBD oil) is from the flowers of the plant.

The flowers contain the cannabinoids which are what made CBD oil rich in them.

Difference between hemp and cannabis2020-04-25T09:39:10+01:00

Hemp is cannabis, but it contains small amounts of THC. Hemp and cannabis are different strains of the same plant.

Hemp produced for CBD oil has been bred to contain very low levels  (<0.3%) of THC, which is the psychoactive component which gives you a high.

Cannabis is bred to contain higher levels of THC vs hemp and will get you high and is therefore illegal in many countries.
