Are Mindful Chef meals actually any good and real food, or not worth it?

I’ll give you my honest review of how good the meals are so you can decide if they’re worth trying or not

If you’ve never tried Mindful Chef (or another meal delivery service like Hello Fresh) you might be wondering what all the hype is about.

It’s a good question as essentially they’re just sending you some ingredients for you to cook…How does that differ to supermarket shopping?!

The truth is, it differs a lot!

Let’s Take a Deeper look…

Here are a few things I love about meal delivery services, and in particular Mindful Chef:

All Ingredients – If you’re cooking up a recipe, you can often need spices, herbs and ingredients you just don’t have. With meal delivery, they give you everything you need in one box. Often the ingredients are even chopped and ready to go!

Zero Waste – Because you only get delivered what you need for the recipe, you don’t leave half your vegetables in the fridge to go off and throw away…We’ve all been there.

Time Saving – You save time in many ways, from not having to select recipes, to shopping for those ingredients and because you have all the ingredients nicely laid out you can just get cooking straight away. You can also see how long each one takes to make and choose the quickest ones for when you’re in a rush.

Quality Food – Mindful Chef have the highest quality ingredients I have seen from one of these services. You can taste the difference and notice it when you’re cooking. It’s more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Variety – There is a huge selection of recipes each week to choose from, so you wont get bored. The combinations are also unique and chef prepared so you know they’ll taste better than what you could rustle up at home.

An Added Bonus…

When you get your recipe book, you can see all of the meals for the whole week. So you can easily go to the supermarket, buy the ingredients and cook the other dishes if you want to.

Increase Nutrient Diversity

I’ve tried so many different combinations of meals that I would never normally make myself. These include plenty of ingredients that I would not usually buy and eat so this means I am getting a really diverse set of nutrients from different vegetables, which I assume can only be a good thing for my body.

HOW IT WORKS

The process for ordering and receiving Mindful Chef is pretty simple

Even if you’re not home for delivery, it’s not a problem as long as you have a safe place for the package

But if you’re wondering how they can deliver fresh meat without it going off, here’s how it works:

Step 1 – Choose Your Delivery

Then you get to decide on which day you will receive your food delivery. What happens if you’re not in?

Well, hopefully you can ask the driver to leave it somewhere safe for you. I live in a flat so they can leave it with the concierge. The boxes are sealed and have cooler boxes with ice-packs inside so you can leave it outside for most of the day.

No concierge? What about a neighbour or a safe place at home. Behind the bins, behind the back-gate, etc. It might even look like rubbish if left next to the recycling so be careful the bin men don’t take it…

Step 2 – Choose Your Meals

You get a range of options each week to choose from. Each option ranges in price. Meat dishes are more expensive, vegetarian ones less so.

You make your choice of how many meals you want and how many servings you want of each meal. For example, I often go for 3 meals a week and each meal is for 2 people.

Top Tip: You need to order at least 4 days ahead to get the full selection of meals, hence why step 1 is choosing your delivery date. The further ahead you book, the more choice you have.

Step 3 – Refrigerate, Cook & Enjoy

It’s easiest to put the food parcels straight into the fridge, along with any fresh meat or dairy products. The foods are packaged into parcels with all the ingredients you need for that recipe to make it super simple.

The it’s the hardest and easiest part of the process…Cook and eat!

The cooking pert is not bad, even if you don’t like cooking. You just follow the recipe and it’s surprisingly easy.

Then you have a tasty, fresh and healthy meal.

Top Tip: If you don’t like to cook too much, get an extra serving or two per meal. Then you cook once and have meals for another day

THE COST

How much does Mindful Chef cost?

The price ranges from £6.25 to £8.75 per meal, depending on the ingredients. Fish and meat is more expensive than vegetarian.

Are Mindful Chef Meals Expensive?

Let’s be clear, Mindful Chef are not the cheapest meals you’re going to eat…And for good reason.

Quality ingredients are not cheap, especially meats and fish. They also don’t pack their meals full with cheap fillers like high carb products such as white pasta.

Let’s take the meal I cooked as an example: Steak with spicy peanut satay and sugar snap peas. This meal cost £8.75 per person, I believe.

If you went to the supermarket to buy the steak it would be a good £5 for a half decent one. So you’re paying an additional £3.75 per meal for the vegetables, the delivery, some profit to them for their efforts, to pay their staff and for the knowledge and instructions of how to make a good meal.

You’re also paying to save time and effort. Thinking what to eat for dinner, then going out to buy the ingredients is such a pain in my opinion.

When you’ve been at work all day, the last thing you want to think about is what to have for dinner. Knowing that you have a full set of ingredients at home ready to cook, so you don’t order Deliveroo, is well worth the money for me.

So, is Mindful Chef expensive…?

It really depends on how much you spend on food now, if it stops you from ordering takeaway (which is way more expensive) and how often you use it.

Personally, I have 3 meals a week and the rest I make myself. The other meals are basic, things like pasta (cheap) or salmon in the oven with leeks and rice (£4-5 odd per person). So, overall, it’s not the cheapest but isn’t the most expensive thing I splash out on either.

It’s incredibly convenient, I cook more than I normally would, I create dishes I would never do myself and I get a very varied range of fresh ingredients.
