“Everyone’s body responds differently to the same food…”

Two of Jenny’s friends had told her about a new, miracle diet. It was low in carbs, high in fat and protein. They’d both managed to lose 4kg in 2 weeks already! She decided to give it a go.

Fast forward 4 weeks and Jenny was struggling. She’d seen no improvement in her body shape, was tired and constantly hungry. She hated the diet and went on a carb heavy binge eating session!

Here’s the thing…

We are all unique. Every person will respond to foods differently. For example, nuts are very healthy but some people can die from eating them. Milk is full of nutrients, but some people are lactose intolerant and it upsets their digestion.

So the one size fits all approach definitely doesn’t work. When you are unaware of what works for you, it’s all just trial and error until you find a solution. Finding that solution is time consuming and very difficult.

A recent development in science and DNA testing is allowing us to understand more about what does and does not work for us, as individuals.

For example, we can now find out how sensitive we are are to carbohydrates and fats. Being sensitive to them means you will absorb lots of the calories from that particular food group.

Which to follow

If you’re sensitive to carbs, you would want to follow a lower carb diet. If you’re sensitive to saturated fats, you’d want to follow a lower saturated fat diet.

So now imagine that you were sensitive to fats and followed a low carb, high-fat diet. How would that feel? It wouldn’t work well for you because you’d want to lower your fat intake and increase your carbs and proteins.

The bottom line…

Understanding what you are sensitive to helps you make informed decisions about which kind of diet to follow. Whether it’s low carb, low fat or something else will vary from person to person.

There is no one size fits all approach to this, or anything in life, if you want to see good results.
